Safe Painting Practices

Panache Paints Paint tins - Safe Painting PracticesWith any painting job there are all sorts of potential pitfalls or dangers. From poor preparation, to choosing the wrong product or even an incorrect paint finish for your room. At Panache Painting and Decorating we are committed to making sure that you have a great result that you will be able to enjoy for many, many years.

When it comes to painting, it’s easy to forget some basic steps, which will protect you from the inherent dangers of painting. Here are some good practices for any painter, whether you are the DIY or professional.

Protective Clothing

Make sure you have some basic protective gear, such as gloves, safety glasses, a dust mask, and of course shoes with good grip. Leaving your eyes and skin exposed may result in something as minor as irritation from sanding dust, to paint chips, drips and solvents dropping into your eyes or onto your skin. A simple mask can also protect your lungs from hazards such as exposure to solid particles, spray mist and fumes.

Ladder Safety

Your safety can also rise or fall, literally, on your ladder! As a standard part of most paint jobs, the ladder is an asset, but it also has many potential dangers. Taking time to check the condition of the ladder, including making sure the steps are free of mud, oil or any other material, which could cause you to slip, is an easily overlooked precaution.

When erecting the ladder, it is important to make sure that it is always placed on an even and stable surface, also don’t forget to check that the area near the ladder is free from clutter, wires or any electrical equipment. When using a ladder, remember to wear shoes with good grip, don’t climb beyond the last three steps of the ladder, and make sure the ladder you have chosen is long enough for the job.

Know your products

From solvents to thinners, primers to treatments, painting products can have potential risks.Take time to read the labels carefully, keep products out of the reach of children and pets, and make sure you are wearing appropriate protective equipment.
