Chosing Good Colours is Good Science

panache painting decorating colour psychology - Choosing good colours is good science

Did you know the colours we choose for our home can affect our moods, emotions, and even how clearly, we think and make decisions? Therefore, it’s important to have a basic understanding of how colours work together, both aesthetically and emotionally. This is often referred to as the ‘psychology of colour’.

When selecting colours, consider:
  • The function of each room
  • The ambience you are wanting to create
  • The size of the room
  • Maintain positive flow from one room to the next
  • And most importantly, the colours you like!

To avoid time consuming costly mistakes here are a few handy hints to consider when selecting the right colours for the main rooms of your home. However, don’t be afraid to mix these suggestions in with current trends, or your own personal preferences!

Kitchen and Dining Room: – Whites and beige are classic versatile colours, creating a sense of elegance and freshness. Whereas; red, orange and yellow are known to stimulate appetite, which is why you often see these colours in many restaurants and fast food outlets.

Living Room: – Blue/Green creates a sense of calmness and tranquillity. However, the brighter the shade, the more intense it may feel, whereas paler shades create a more peaceful mood, making it the perfect space to relax after a hard day at work and chill out with the family.

Bedrooms: – Create a relaxing ambience using neutral colours, including whites, greys or beige hues. These colours soften the bedroom, making it more conducive for sleep. However, when it comes to the master bedroom you may like to include a purple feature wall, as this colour is known to conjure up feelings of luxury and sumptuous comfort.

Study/Office: – Blues create feelings of calm, focus and energy – perfect for work productivity.

Whilst we are talking about colour psychology, don’t forget to personalise your rooms with accessories, i.e. choosing complementing colours in furniture, fabrics and ornaments, as this adds interest and character to your rooms.
